A Garden Grows Here

A special garden is growing in a hidden, grassy area on the south side of Scheck Hillel Community School’s campus.. Grade 6 students in the Samuel and Henrietta Scheck Middle School Design/STEM program recently planted the first round of crops of their hydroponic garden, including cucumbers, beets, thyme, rosemary, lettuce, arugula, kale and more. This project is designed to give students a 360-degree, hands-on view of what it takes to grow healthy food. From system setup and planting to maintenance and harvesting, students in Design/STEM are directly involved in managing every aspect of the garden. They will also create a visual guide for identifying the crops and will produce waterproof labels on 3D printers. A "Name Our Garden" logo contest is underway. Several academic departments (and the cafeteria!) are collaborating to integrate this experience across areas of learning.

We invite you to take a walk by our new garden to see what's growing!
