Grade 10 Thesis Kindles Discovery

From forensics to fashion and halacha to chessed, our 2023 Grade 10 Thesis Expo reflected a broad range of student passions. The thesis is an independent study course through which students select topics of interest and explore them deeply throughout the school year. They conduct research, design innovative ways to engage with their topics, evaluate progress and present their findings. Every project connects with a Scheck Hillel core value and a career interest.

Adina Heinrich led a shiur about women in Torah for more than 100 participants after her Torah learning at school and camp raised questions and curiosity. She dove into the topic by examining gender roles in Torah through chevrutah (learning with a partner). In Adina's words: "It was such an amazing experience to share what I had learned with more than 100 women and see them getting involved in topics they might have never questioned before. It definitely sparked a lot of thinking in each and every person who attended and was an experience I will never forget."

Ariella Berenstein spread light in a time of darkness  by creating hand-made toys for young children in the hospital. Ariella created various types of toys that each child can customize by adding a smiley face,  in hopes of bringing happiness to those who are struggling. This experience was transformational for Ariella; she made deep connections and learned by dedicating consistent time to children who face challenges.

Tali Cohen found passion in innovation, creating a dog collar to help dogs stay cool on warmer days. From sewing the original prototype to manufacturing a product, Tali gained hands-on experience as a young entrepreneur for a good cause.

In the technology arena, Naomi Sternberg designed a digital badge as an incentive for student performance in academics, leadership, athletics and service. She worked with Scheck Hillel's IT Director, Josh Bierman, to understand the requirements and feasibility of such a project. Another student, Noah Behar, built a video gaming computer from scratch.

Other impressive projects include:
Kenan Ben-Shalom wrote a novel, Gabriel Stredni built a guitar, Shena Aghion designed and made jewelry by hand and so much more.

Congratulations to the students and their thesis mentor,
Cristina Florez, for her guidance.
