Scheck Hillel Teachers' 'Innovative Program' Selected by Int'l. Foundation

Hillel’s Grade 4 students and families celebrated the first phase of LEV: Living Everyday Values, a program designed by Scheck Hillel’s Juda and Maria Diener Lower School Hebrew and Judaic Studies teachers Elisheva Krevsky and Meytal Miara. The goal of this ongoing educational program is to bring each of Scheck Hillel’s five core values to life through learning, beginning with the mida of kavod - respect.

We thought that by incorporating our core values into our curriculum and teaching how to uphold and apply them to daily life, we could help our students develop self-awareness and cultivate a desire to grow as the Jewish global citizens we describe in our mission,” explained Mrs. Miara.

Ms. Krevsky and Mrs. Miara were selected by the Legacy Heritage Teacher Institute, funded by Legacy Heritage Fund, to participate in its 2018 session at Hebrew University. The Institute offers teachers an opportunity to participate in specially designed educational programs to raise the quality of instruction and learning through intensive training, mentoring, and the development and implementation of sustainable, replicable, innovative curricula and programs. LEV is the result for Scheck Hillel and is entirely and generously funded by Legacy Heritage Fund, including Tuesday’s event.

The celebration’s D’var Torah was delivered by Sonia Calef; classmates Andre Alperowitz and Lily Koplowitz shared what they had learned about kavod and the difference their actions can make. Students also received certificates and badges in recognition of reaching the first milestone. Immediately afterward, the students put into practice the next mida - chessed (kindness) - by contributing their own tzedakah to the Kulanu Scholarship Fund here on campus, erev the launch of 2019 Kulanu Scholarship Awareness Month. Kol HaKavod, Grade 4 students and faculty!
