Singer and Sion Named To Miami Herald Boys' Soccer First Team

Scheck Hillel Community School's varsity boys' soccer standouts junior Max Singer and sophomore Leon Sion were named to the Miami Herald Boys' Soccer 3A-1A First Team, Thursday, April 18.
The midfielder Sion finished the season with 10 goals and 12 assists while defensive player Singer finished with four goals and four assists.

Both boys' have played soccer for the Lions for the last seven years and each year have grown not only physically but mentally as well.

"Hillel soccer means the world to me," said Sion. "I get a staggering feeling when I am with my boys on the soccer pitch. It is a dream playing and representing Hillel in one of the toughest sports."

He recalls scoring the winning goal in the last two minutes of the regional semifinal game against long-time rivals, Miami Country Day School as one of his best moments during the 2018-19 season. "When I scored all of my teammates came running to me and jumping and celebrating as we saw the victorious win in our eyes, it gave me the best adrenaline i've ever had."

He also scored the goal to tie the game in the regional finals that gave the Lions a chance to win. With a few bus loads of supporters in the stands the team lost in overtime in the last three minutes, but they all knew they had left their hearts out on the field.

"That was when I knew that losing is just as good as winning when we do it together as a family."

Both of Sion's goals mentioned above were assisted by Singer who also talks about what an honor it was fighting for a shot to make it back to States with his team.

"I feel extremely blessed to be able to play a role on Hillel’s team," said Singer.

Making First-Team before their senior years was a welcomed surprise to both of the boys. "(This) shows me that my hard work is not going unnoticed," said Singer. "It’s an honor that i’m being recognized for our team’s success this year."

A big moment for him this season came after he scored the deciding goal during regulation with a penalty kick. This happened during an elimination game to reach district finals. Singer says he was able to show step up in a big moment for his team and that allowed him to show how much the team meant to him.

This honor has served as motivation for both boys going into next season. While making the Regional finals was indeed a great achievement, they are looking forward to making it all the way to a State Championship.
