Lions' Second Half Spark Leads the Team to Victory

The Scheck Hillel boys' varsity basketball team is the 2018 JDSSF Preseason Basketball Champion after defeating Hebrew Academy 53-51, Tuesday, November 20.
In what can only be classified as a Cinderella story, the Lions overcame the struggles of the first half to take the lead in the final seconds of the game.

Hebrew Academy scored the first points of the game taking a small lead over Scheck Hillel to begin the matchup. That small lead then started to spread as the Lions struggled on both defense and offense. The Warriors would go into the second quarter with a 17-5 lead.

Scheck Hillel managed play better offensively in the second quarter but it still wasn't enough as Hebrew Academy held a 28-13 going into the half.

After a few words from the coaching staff the team came back into the game with a new found attitude and it showed as they outscored their opponent 23-12 cutting their 15 point lead down to four.

Leading scorer for the Lions was junior Alan Berkman who finished with 18 points. Berkman scored with 47.1 seconds left on the clock to tie the game at 50.  Senior Aaron Ben-Shmuel added 16 points in the win and grabbed four rebounds.

Junior Samuel Taieb's basket from under the rim gave the Lions their first lead of the game with a little over 30 seonds to play. Taieb scored all four of his points in the fourth quarter and was the leading rebounder on the team finishing with 10.

Other key players for the Lions in the win were senior Yaniv Assraf ( 9pts. and 4 steals) and freshman Daniel Abbo (6pts. and 7rebs.) Juniors Myles GilbertSaul Birmaher, Jaime Acherman and Emmanuel Abitbol each contributed vital minutes for the Lions.

Scheck Hillel will travel to Divine Savior in the first game of the regular season, Monday, November 26 at 7:30PM.
