Scheck Hillel Community School Shares Technology in Education (ISTE) Learning in Summer Forum

Fresh from completing the school year, a team of Scheck Hillel Community School students and faculty traveled to Chicago to present at the 2018 International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) conference, a global forum for educational technology. Scheck Hillel's delegates - among more than 15,000 attendees - included Benny Dimitri, '26, Jake Kravetz, '26, Sophie Kravetz, '31, Pola Levy '23, Samuel Levy, '20, and Adam Scheck, '25, and were led by our Juda and Maria Diener Lower School’s technology teacher Nancy Penchev and science teacher Nilam Patel.

Jake and Benny showcased the South Florida Jewish Day School League Lego Robotics program, while Sophie shared her enthusiasm for the robots and coding tools she uses in Scheck Hillel's After School Program.

Samuel addressed administrators and teachers to make the case for STEM education. He cited his group's win at CIJE's annual Young Engineers Conference and credited project-based learning for improving his ability to think critically. Samuel said, "I had an amazing experience at the ISTE 2018 conference in Chicago! I was able to meet many like minded students, teachers and school directors who I shared my ideas and experiences with. I also learned from other presenters and projects and was amazed to be surrounded by 19,000 other STEM lovers! I am truly thankful to Scheck Hillel and the faculty for this opportunity."

Pola and Adam described the After School robotics class they lead using Dash, a robot created by Wonder Workshop. Pola met with Bryan Miller, an executive from the company, who is very excited to continue mentoring her and building our program.

Mrs. Penchev presented a session on Digital Citizenship in the language arts classroom. She also worked the booth for Common Sense Media, helping other educators learn about this non-profit's amazing resources. She met with the creator of Padlet, who was impressed with Scheck Hillel's summer learning program for teachers using the tool.

Mrs. Penchev commented, "I was so thrilled to watch our students meet with educators from all over the world and share our Scheck Hillel programs. We have several invitations to team up with Jewish schools and public schools all over the world."

Kol HaKavod to all participants!
