Many Ways to Serve
Central to Scheck Hillel's mission and curriculum, students extend their helping hands to communities near and far throughout the year. Most recently, a group of students in Grades 10-11 teamed up with Southern NCSY and the nonprofit New Orleans College Prep (NOCAP) on a January relief mission to New Orleans. Shelly Woldenberg ‘23, one of 15 Scheck Hillel students who participated, recounted the group's experience:
“We traveled to New Orleans to assist people who had lost their homes due to the hurricanes. We cleaned and broke down three different houses. We also visited the Lower 9th Ward Grocery Store, which Hurricane Katrina impacted, and had the pleasure of meeting Burnell. He taught us to be grateful for everything we have and to go about our daily lives with a smile on our faces. After building these houses, assisting these folks, and conversing with Burnell, there was no better way to learn to appreciate what we have and the opportunity to make a difference. We could not have been happier to do something benefiting others and making a significant difference in their lives!”
Scheck Hillel offers opportunities for our students to serve through school-based clubs and links them to community-based organizations. Look here to learn about J-Serve, an initiative of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation hosting the 25th annual Teen Day of Service on Monday, February 21.
