Back to School Tips for Families

As summer winds down, it is time to start preparing children to head back to school. Whether your student is returning or starting at Scheck Hillel, here are a few helpful tips for families to ease back into the school mindset.
  • Build excitement about the start of school. Post a calendar in the kitchen and let your child mark down the days until the first day of school.
  • Start a conversation. Encourage your child to ask questions or voice any concerns they may have, but also talk about all the wonderful things that await them at school.

  • Get back into a routine. Start gradually adjusting bedtime and wake up times several days before the first day of school. Re-establish morning routines by setting out clothes the night before and allot a certain amount of time for breakfast in the morning.
  • Do Your Homework. Make sure that your child has completed any summer assignments and talk about how these will relate to what they will be studying this year.
  • Involve your children in preparations. New students should attend orientation events. Review basic activities such as pick-up and drop-off routines and schedules, talk about the school’s dress code and shop for uniforms and school supplies together. Scheck Hillel provides Lower School students with supplies, but children may enjoy shopping for backpacks and other personal items, such as water bottles and face masks.

  • Choose a place for daily homework that is distraction-free. Encourage your child to personalize the space with individual touches and supplies. This may include a board to display a calendar and reminders.
  • Encourage your child to use the school planner. At Scheck Hillel, all students in Grades 2-12 receive a school planner. Talk about the advantages of using this tool to help manage time and keep track of assignments.
  • Sign up, try out, get involved. With a new school year, new opportunities arise. Once your child is acclimated, encourage them to become active in a school club, team, music program or after-school enrichment program.
Here’s to an exciting, stress-free start to another great school year!
