International Holocaust Remembrance Day

January 27 was International Holocaust Remembrance Day - the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1945. Rabbinic Head Dr. Ezra Levy placed this historic moment in context for Middle School, underscoring the need to educate for generations to come.

Dr. Levy told students that when the Russian army liberated Auschwitz-Birkenau on January 27, 1945, they found a total of 7,000 prisoners, a tiny fraction of the 1.3 million people who had been interned - and murdered - in the 500-acre camp. The children who remained from the 232,000 sent to Auschwitz could not communicate with the Russian soldiers...instead, they rolled up their sleeves to show their tattooed numbers. This snapshot of the liberation gave students a deeper understanding of the event’s place in the broader history of the Holocaust.
