Grade 10 Thesis Expo Goes Online
Scheck Hillel’s Grade 10 Thesis Expo, the annual showcase of student-developed innovations, services, and solutions, can be now enjoyed online. Scheck Hillel’s required independent study course gives students the opportunity to select a topic of interest and explore it deeply throughout the course of the school year. While quarantine was a challenge, students stayed on track, modified their goals to fit the situation, and carried on with some wonderful results!
“A tweak in this year’s program allowed students to collaborate,” explained project advisor Cristina Florez, “yet each student pursued distinct goals as they built the final project together.” A notable group project was "The Boiling Point" - a website of interesting podcasts dealing with sports, politics, and current events. “Each student handled a different aspect of the final product - learning how to put a website together, how to edit videos, how to share opinions on different subjects via podcast, and more.” Ariel Eisen, Elie Fishman, Daniel Gershgorin, Jacob Goldshtein, and Zachary Lemmer came together for this project.
Another example of collaborative work was music that was played and sung together via Zoom by two students, Thalia Bentolila and Amit Miara. The original goal was to write their own song, but with the quarantine, these artists ended up fulfilling their goal by performing cover songs from other artists. Ms. Florez noted that this was still quite the feat given the distance between the two!
