Scheck Hillel Students Excel to States

Eighteen Scheck Hillel Community School students received a Superior rating - the highest possible - for solos performed in the 2020 Thursday District 20 Solo & Ensemble adjudication on February 13, 2020. In all, 20 Scheck Hillel students earned a Superior or Excellent (second highest ranking) in the adjudication. Scheck Hillel hosted the event for its own Band students, as well as peers from Miami Country Day School.

As part of this nationwide program, student instrumentalists select and prepare pieces from an approved list of works, performing their solos with piano accompaniment before a State-certified adjudicator.

For the third consecutive year, Joi Alon '20 (Alto Saxophone) advanced to the State level of Solo and Ensemble. Joshua Schmutter '20 (Alto Saxophone) also advanced to States (March 26-March 28, 2020, Cooper City High School in Cooper City). They both earned Superior ratings and played specific levels of difficulty to qualify.

The following students earned a Superior rating: Daniel Abbo '22 (Clarinet), Jaime Acherman '20 (Clarinet), Zoe Alon '23 (Trombone), Leonardo Bentata '21 (Trumpet), Jack Brown '21 (Trombone), Malvina DiMitri '22 (Flute), Eli Gelb '20 (Tenor Saxophone), Sadie Lemmer '25 (Flute), Zachary Lemmer '22 (Flute), Noah Levine '23 (Alto Saxophone), Yitzhak Lopez '25 (Alto Saxophone), Valerie Nichols '25 (Flute), Mykhaylo Rafalskyy '21 (Euphonium), Joseph Rimon '20 (Alto Saxophone), Ella Stern '24 (Euphonium) and Hannah Stern '22 (Trombone).

Amit Miara '22 (Flute) and Benjamin Ratzker '20 (Alto Saxophone) earned an Excellent rating.

Since 2013, Scheck Hillel has hosted District 20's Thursday Solo & Ensemble adjudication to create an opportunity for South Florida’s student-musicians to participate in the adjudication and uphold their observance of Shabbat. This opportunity is made possible thanks to the joint efforts of the Florida Bandmasters Association (FBA) and Scheck Hillel Community School.
