Seniors Visit Lawmakers on Israel Advocacy Tour

Written by Olga Benacerraf '20:

This week, senior students went on a road trip throughout South Florida as part of the Israel Advocacy segment of their Judaic Capstone class. This expanded our learning beyond the four walls of a classroom, by dynamically being involved with our nation’s great leaders and representatives to advocate for the American-Israel relationship.

We started the journey at Senator Marco Rubio’s office, where we met with his staff and learned about his approach to policy and diplomacy regarding the State of Israel as well as the surrounding Middle Eastern countries. Our next stop took us to the Israeli Consulate, which allowed us to talk to Ambassador Jonathan Peled, who addressed his role as an Israeli representative in Florida. Following this, we arrived at the local Florida AIPAC offices, where we learned about the importance of the continued support given to the United States-Israel alliance. To conclude the trip, we heard from senior staff of Congressman Ted Deutch and Congresswoman Lois J. Frankel.

Scheck Hillel Community School’s Capstone Senior Seminar introduces students to seminar-style learning in Language Arts and Judaic Studies. In the Israel Advocacy class, students develop a deeper knowledge about Israel and the Middle East and the tools to defend and present Israeli positions outside of the home community. The course material examines the truth about what is pictured in the media and popular culture relating to Israel. The course is designed to promote a love for Israel and the Israeli people as well as expose students to the possibility of studying in Israel after they graduate from Scheck Hillel.
