Encore! PK3 Makes Music

Prior to Passover, the children in Morah Channah Fabian and Morah Barbara Forte’s PK3 class learned the story of Miriam and her tambourine. Their curiosity about this ancient instrument unleashed an exploration of music and instruments from around the world. The class read stories, including the book “Zin Zin Zin A Violin,” which exposed them to the language of music. They played various instruments at “invitation tables” and enjoyed traditional Mexican music with Morah Dionne Locket. The best was yet to come: The children chose their favorite instruments and recreated them using recycled materials, then performed together in their own orchestra. Morah Channa remarked, “They learned to listen to each other’s tunes and worked collaboratively to create rhythm and synchronism.” In ECE and throughout Scheck Hillel, teachers watch for sparks of student curiosity and ignite them, building literacy, cultivating musical gifts and celebrating discovery. Encore, indeed!
