The Book of Bamidbar introduces us to our long and arduous journey in the desert. We leave Sinai, the place of revelation, where we received our Holy Torah and experienced prophecy and closeness to Hashem.

Once we left, Sinai reverted to being a bare mountain with no holiness or significance to the Jewish people. What happened to all of the revealed holiness? Why no pilgrimage to Sinai?

Nachmanides instructs us that with the construction of the Mishkan, Tabernacle, the Kedusha, the revelation at Sinai, was transferred to the portable traveling house of G-d. The Holy Art in the Mishkan represented the revelation at Sinai as well as the on-going living source of G-d’s presence amongst us, the Shechinah.

The Kindergarten classes at Hillel decided to honor their moms with a Mother's Day Tea. Mom's were treated to a delicious spread of bagels and cream cheese, strawberries and whipped cream and "children-made" mini cupcakes...and, of course, a choice of teas!

The children sang, "You Are My Sunshine" and shared the "All About My Mom" books they wrote for this special occasion.
We’re wrapping up Week 2 of Kulanu Scholarship Awareness Month with a BIG thank you and to let you know that we have more work to do!

Our thermometer has only climbed a tiny bit since last week, taking us to 74% of our annual goal. That means we need to raise another at $478,500 for our students in need of tuition assistance!

PK2 hosted an art gallery of their own original works with a viewing for parents and students in higher grades. They then auctioned it off…
all to benefit Kulanu.

Upper School students, including some of our State-ranked varsity soccer team,
volunteered for evening Kulanu phone-a-thons.

Across all grade levels, General Studies and Judaic Studies teachers are collaborating. Check out this tzedakah-based Lower School math lesson:

Power in Numbers:
When we do something as a class - or as a community - we can see bigger results. If one person gives, what can be purchased with that money to help someone? If everyone in a class or grade brought in the same amount, how much tzedakah would we have? Connect multiplication and time. If a student collected a set amount for tzedakah and each day brought in that amount, how long would it take to reach our goal? What if everyone in the class or grade pitched in? What if everyone in our community pitched in?

One of the misunderstood words in our Holy and life-giving Torah is the word Tzedakah. Translated as charity, this translation points out the problem with all translation.

Charity is a word that speaks to a culture of, “What is mine is mine and what is yours is yours.” Charity calls to the heartstrings of those with surplus wealth…giving often times only when actually confronted with the decrepit and demoralized state of the poor.

A good example of this is the cleft-faced child on the TV commercial asking for a dollar a month to help the ill and destitute. If one is so moved, fine. If not, we revert back to, “What is mine is mine and what is yours is yours.” Continue to Rabbi Hecht’s blog for his complete message.
